What is pattern drenching?

Interior design lets you transform an ordinary room or house into something that reflects your personality. While your tastes should guide every interior design project, being aware of the latest trends can help hone your tastes and create a sanctuary you never want to leave. One of the more popular current trends is pattern drenching. This comes on the heels of colour drenching, which covers a room, including the ceiling, in one hue. While this produces a dramatic aesthetic, it doesn’t come close to the stunning effect that pattern drenching can have on a space. Let’s look at pattern drenching to learn if this bold and modern approach is right for your home.

What is Pattern Drenching?

Pattern drenching is a maximalist design approach that uses patterns as the central principle. Patterns are used on the walls, upholstery, textiles and, in some cases, even the ceiling. Essentially, instead of using a single colour or palette to decorate a space, you rely on patterns to maximize the dramatic effect.

Where Does Pattern Drenching Work Best?

Pattern drenching is ideal for rooms with only a few architectural details. Try this method in simpler rooms with very few accents, or none. For these rooms, pattern drenching can add a vibrant dash of personality. Remember, it’s okay to play with the rules of pattern drenching or to push the boundaries. However, it’s best to be thoughtful rather than jump in with both feet. SUMMER 2025 • décor You might be thinking that pattern drenching would be overwhelming, but the opposite is true if done right. The commitment to patterns can create an aura of relaxation and make the space more restful compared to a pop of colour or a more economical use of a single pattern. A light use of colour or an accent wall will draw the eye, leaving the rest of the space unnoticed. Pattern drenching helps achieve cohesion, one unified aesthetic to create a soothing environment.

Tips to Pattern Drench a Space Successfully

Pattern drenching isn’t an exact science, but it’s wise to be equipped with a strong sense of how to execute this style. Use these tips to understand the nuance and boldness needed to drench a space in evocative patterns.

  • Consider the undertones. Review the undertones of your wallpaper and fabric to ensure they don’t contrast with a pattern.
  • Create visual impact. A variety of patterns can ground a room, and embroideries and woven fabrics can add texture and an alluring visual weight.
  • Select colours that unify a space. Contrasting colour can work in some design styles, but less so with pattern drenching. Select colours that complement one another and act as bridges between the patterns. Get creative with your pattern selection, but choose colours that unify.
  • Maximize your boldness. Some design expressions call for tempering down boldness and embracing subtlety. Pattern drenching requires the opposite. Be bold when mixing patterns, as a cautious approach will not produce the desired result.
  • Use different scales to repeat patterns. It’s perfectly okay to repeat patterns, but to avoid repetition, use them in different scales. For instance, you can use a pattern on both a trim and to cover a wall. This helps the space achieve a rhythm and avoid a look that feels one-note or repetitive.

Mistakes to Avoid When Pattern Drenching

You can have some fun with pattern drenching, but avoid these common mistakes. None of these are meant to steer you toward a safer style, but can help you avoid the pitfalls to ensure it looks the way you want it to.

  • Be considerate when mixing patterns. It’s advisable to never mix patterns with bright colours with patterns featuring muddier colours. For instance, a pattern with a clean white undertone might not go well with a tea stained undertone.
  • Avoid overusing small patterns. Small patterns can overwhelm a room when used too often. They are best when grouped with bigger prints that stand out and create a more balanced design.
  • Choose patterns carefully for small rooms. Room proportions matter with pattern drenching. The wrong pattern can make a room feel smaller, which is rarely the outcome you want, and is even more detrimental in a small room.

A Trend That’s Here to Stay

Pattern drenching might feel like a trend, but its popularity is not an illusion. Its bold and contemporary look matches the overarching design trend, and its appeal resides in allowing you to implant your personality into a space.

If you’re planning on redesigning a room or your home, consider pattern drenching. Don’t worry if it feels intimidating. That’s the point, as this design movement aims to transform ordinary rooms into something transgressive and visually arresting.
